| The Clean up | When Josiah was 20 years old, in the twelfth year of his reign, he began to purge the land of the idolatrous sites and false priests. He burned human bones on the altar at Bethel, fulfilling the prophecy. None of his sons followed YHWH and led the people down a path of wickedness, although there was still a faithful remnant in the land. | Possible Pattern: Eventually, the leadership fails and the nation falls away from the one true God. The Satanic forces resurge and regain control, leading the people on a path of wickedness, thus releasing YHWH's judgments on the U.S. (Jeremiah 10.1-18). There will still be a faithful remnant in the land. |
| Question: Did Josiah receive bad advice from the 'sleepers' who wanted to go back to the days of idolatry and corruption and saw this as a way to get rid of Josiah? None of his sons qualified as 'good' kings of Judah. Jehoiakim and Zedekiah in particular reigned poorly and in rebellion. This argues that 'the swamp' went quiet during Josiah's reign and waited for an opportunity to remove Josiah. The corruption in the government and priesthood likely ran very deep. | ||
| Question: If Josiah had not been killed at this time, might YHWH have continued to postpone the judgment on Israel for another 20 years? Josiah was only 39 years old when he died. He could have easily lived another 20 years to c. 589 B.C. The Temple was destroyed in 587 B.C. | ||
